INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

Animation in modern games is more than just moving sprites - it’s about creating believable, dynamic characters and environments. This book dives deep into advanced animation programming, covering skinned rigs, inverse kinematics, ragdoll physics, and procedural animation systems. With practical examples and detailed explanations, it equips developers with the tools to implement complex animation systems that enhance realism and interactivity. Ideal for intermediate to advanced programmers, it bridges the gap between basic animation and cutting-edge techniques used in professional game studios.

The best book on this subject I have read

This is the one to get if you are serious about game development.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. The chapters on game development are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. An easy five stars from me. I look forward to whatever the author writes next.

A worthwhile read

Almost excellent. A second edition could easily push it to five stars.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.

Good value, minor gaps

Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order.
